Got my 3-year-old to finally schlep her own stuff
This set is exactly what I wanted: a small suitcase and backpack that my 3-year-old would find exciting enough to want to pull and wear all by herself. The suitcase has the shiny dancing Dora pictures on it and is hot pink on the sides, and my daughter wheeled it all over the house as soon as we pulled it out of the box, and won't let anyone else carry it. She totally loves the set. It is large enough for a night or two at Grandma's -- it held two changes of clothes, pajamas, pull-ups, blankie, and two stuffed animals with room to spare -- but it's not big enough to make it too heavy for the kid to pull herself. It has a canvas handle on top so when a grownup does need to carry it, there's a convenient way to do so. The backpack is really tiny, roughly the size of a lunch bag, but again, the kid's 3, and I wanted a backpack that couldn't contain so much that it would be heavy for her. There's no padding on the straps but since it can't hold much that's no big deal.
I do have one major durability concern, and that's the choice of zipper; it's a very light-duty zipper and I can't imagine it'd hold well if the suitcase were overstuffed. Also, the way the bag is constructed, it is difficult for my daughter to zip and unzip it herself, but that may be a blessing in disguise.
The bag and backpack have now survived one air trip, and the kid dragged it all the way herself, up and down several concourses. It still looks brand new after one trip. So I'm feeling a bit more confident that it'll last her the couple of years that she'll want to use it.
